Ken Westley RIP Remembered (14/11/2016)

Charles Gains (Former Halesowen A & CC Member and now with Liverpool Pembroke & Sefton Harriers ) writes...

"I first met Ken in the mid-60s when Smethwick Harriers were folding and he joined the Halesowen club. He became immediately involved, even taking on the job of secretary at one point. Like myself he was no great runner but had a great love of the simplicity of road and cross country running. He was a meticulous record keeper and lover of the history of the sport.

Ken held strong views on a multiplicity of topics which did not always endear him to everyone but you while you could easily disagree there was underneath was very kind and respectful man. I walked the Lakes with him on occasion and we even combined for the Vaux 2 Man Mountain Marathon. We both loved the wild places and he was the ideal companion. We could walk for hours without talking simply taking in the sheer beauty of the hills.

I am grateful that I met up with him again earlier in the year and we swapped old stories and a few jokes. For me the lights are going out on what was a very rich time of joy and companionship.

I trust you have taken your kit with you, Ken. There's a pack run of old guys assembling somewhere who are going to welcome your eternal company."
